WHIPLASH
What is whiplash?
The term whiplash describes the acceleration-deceleration forces on the neck which can occur in motor vehicle accidents, diving accidents and other mishaps. These forces can result in injury to the muscles, ligaments and joints of the neck and spine. When people experience pain or dizziness following such an incident, the experience is known as “whiplash associated disorder”.
What are the symptoms of whiplash associated disorder?
Symptoms vary in severity and nature between individuals. Sufferers often report pain in the neck, headaches, pain or tightness across the shoulders and occasionally dizziness or nausea. Some people who experience a whiplash type incident experience no pain at all.
How can physiotherapy help whiplash associated disorder?
Whiplash is a condition with a high recovery rate, and research has found that people who resume their normal daily activities usually recover faster than those who greatly change or reduce their activity levels. Axis Physiotherapy can assist by advising you on appropriate activity levels. Your physiotherapist can also provide you with specific exercises to maintain flexibility and improve the action of the supporting muscles of the neck. Your physiotherapist can also help with resuming activities such as lifting, carrying, work and hobbies.
