RSI

What is RSI?

RSI or Repetitive Strain Injury is a mechanism of injury, not a diagnosis. It occurs from repeated physical movements, such as keyboard or mouse-use, gripping of tools or sporting equipment, resulting in stress placed on tendons, nerves, muscles and other soft body tissues. Poor posture and sustained pressure also increases the risk of injury. Various occupations and sports have characteristic RSI’s that can result from the typical tasks performed. Common RSI conditions include Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Tendonitis, Tenosynovitis, De-Quervains Syndrome and Ganglion formation.

What are the symptoms?

RSI conditions have many varied symptoms depending on the area of strain. The following may indicate the onset of RSI.

  • Recurring pain or soreness in neck, shoulders, wrists or hands.
  • Tingling, numbness, coldness or loss of sensation.
  • Loss of grip strength, lack of endurance, weakness, fatigue
  • How can physiotherapy help?

RSI is best prevented in its early stages before it becomes difficult to control. Good posture, ergonomics and limiting time in stressing working conditions can help to prevent or treat the disorder. Axis Physiotherapy can provide a thorough assessment of your injury and determine contributing factors. Protection of the body part from the aggravating activity may be assisted by bracing or taping and specific instructions about activity modification. Massage, joint mobilisation and electrotherapy may be used to relieve pain and increase flexibility. Strength and control exercises may be prescribed to change faulty movement patterns. If necessary, assessment of your workstation or sporting technique and recommendation of appropriate equipment or modifications will be made.
