FIBROMYALGIA
What is fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, and multiple tender points. "Tender points" refer to tenderness that occurs in precise, localized areas, particularly in the neck, spine, shoulders, and hips. People with this syndrome may also experience headaches, sleep disturbances, morning stiffness, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety, and other symptoms. Diagnosis of fibromyalgia can be difficult and is made after exclusion of other conditions.
What causes fibromyalgia?
The specific cause of fibromyalgia is unknown. However, doctors believe a number of factors may contribute. These may include chemical changes in the brain, abnormalities of the autonomic nervous system or muscle metabolism. Injury, trauma or psychological stress may trigger the development of fibromyalgia in some people. Fibromyalgia is more common in women than in men.
