CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME

What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is an overuse phenomenon and a common form of repetitive strain injury. The 'Carpal Tunnel' refers to a gap in the carpal (wrist) bones through which muscles, blood vessels and nerves pass on their way to the hand from the forearm. This anatomical space is very limited to start with and the problem of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome arises when there is swelling within this small space.

What can cause carpal tunnel syndrome?

This swelling can be caused by repetitive activities during sports or work related activities. As the space within the Carpal Tunnel is reduced, one of the nerves that innervates the hand, the Median Nerve, can be compromised.

How can physiotherapy help carpal tunnel syndrome pain?

The most important part of treatment of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is to eradicate aggravating factors. This requires a rest from activities such as typing, hammering or gripping a racquet until the symptoms abate. It may help if the wrist and forearm are splinted to ease the strain on the affected structures.

In acute cases, Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs) prescribed by a doctor can be effective for the relief of symptoms by reducing swelling. This can be aided by the application of ice packs (never apply ice directly to the skin). Some specific exercises can also be of benefit to help the nerves and tendons glide more easily.

Assessment of the whole upper limb may also be necessary to identify any further restriction that may put excess strain on the nerves running from your neck to your hand that may contribute to carpal tunnel syndrome.
